Gemini App Tops 1 Billion Monthly Users as Google’s Fastest-Growing Product – Unite.AI

Google’s Gemini app has passed 1 billion monthly active users, a milestone CEO Sundar Pichai announced on August 11, 2026, calling it the fastest-growing product in the company’s history and its 14th to cross the billion-user mark.

Pichai announced the figure on X, crediting Josh Woodward, the Google vice president who leads Google Labs, the Gemini app, and AI Studio, along with the broader Gemini team. Google published companion usage data on its Keyword blog the same day, framing the billion-user mark around how people actually interact with the assistant.

The company-reported numbers sketch a product that has moved well past the text-box phase. Google says 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini, and one in five Gemini Live interactions goes beyond voice into live camera feeds or screen sharing. The app generates more than 150 million images a day, can automate actions across more than 40 apps on Android, and has drawn over 100 million active users on iOS, where Google says macOS power users prompt roughly twice as often as users on other surfaces. Among students, 38% of school-related requests arrive with an attachment.

How Fast the Gemini App Got to a Billion Users

The growth curve, assembled from Google’s own disclosures, is the substance behind Pichai’s “fastest growing” phrasing. The app had 400 million monthly users at Google I/O in May 2025. By the company’s third-quarter 2025 earnings report on October 29, 2025, that figure was over 650 million, with queries tripling quarter over quarter. At I/O 2026 on May 19, 2026, Pichai put the count above 900 million and said daily requests had grown more than sevenfold in a year. Alphabet’s second-quarter 2026 earnings release, filed July 22, 2026, reported 950 million monthly active users, with daily actives tripling over the prior year.

That works out to roughly 50 million users added in the three weeks between the earnings disclosure and the August 11, 2026 announcement, and 600 million added in the fifteen months since I/O 2025. The figures are company-reported throughout, a point worth holding onto when comparing headline user counts across assistants, since each lab defines and discloses the metric on its own terms.

The billion-user club Gemini joins is itself a Google construct. At I/O 2026, Pichai said the company had 13 products with over a billion users each, five of them above 3 billion. Gemini is the fourteenth, and the first built natively around the company’s own frontier models. The app competes most directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which OpenAI says 1 billion people use each week.

What Google Says Is Driving Adoption

The company’s own account credits voice and agentic features. The Gemini Live conversational mode, re-engineered at I/O 2026 with a model Google described as smarter, faster, and less distracted by background noise, anchors the voice numbers Google is now citing. Gemini Spark, the always-on personal agent that runs on Gemini 3.5 and the Antigravity harness, went from a trusted-tester launch at I/O to a worldwide rollout in the July 31, 2026 Gemini Drop, which also shipped Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite with what Google described as better reasoning and greater speed.

There are limits in the fine print. Spark’s global rollout excludes the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Nigeria. Information agents in Search roll out first to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and Daily Brief is coming to the Gemini app, per the I/O keynote.

The roadmap Pichai and Woodward have laid out points at the next billion rather than savoring the first. Google’s stated goal for the app is to make it, in the company’s words, the most personal, proactive, and powerful assistant, with Spark operating directly in Chrome and sub-agents and text-or-email control already on the summer shipping list. Google’s broader consumer AI push has had stumbles alongside the growth, including an Earth imaging tool it pulled a day after launch earlier this month, but the app itself is now the clearest distribution asset any lab has: a billion monthly users, a fresh model cadence, and an agent layer arriving while the curve is still steep.
